Chapter Eighteen

Brooklyn Sloane

October 2022

Thursday — 12:34pm

“There is nothing we can do.”

Brook shot a sideways glance at Fritz in annoyance, not content with such a response. They all agreed that Professor Hermann seemed to be at the heart of this investigation, along with Bonnie Heraldsen. It was as if the team had been handed all the pieces to a puzzle, but they weren’t being given enough light to put them all together.

“I remember that look well,” Fritz replied in warning as he motioned that they needed to vacate the hallway outside of Professor Hermann’s office. “Brook, Hermann lawyered up. He doesn’t have to answer any of our questions, and I have nothing substantial in order to make an arrest. The second that I brought up Nora Campbell, he shut down. As I just said, there isn’t a damn thing we can do about it.”

“There is always something we can do,” Brook countered as she fell into step next to Theo. Fritz pulled up the rear, but he could hear her just fine. “I’m not sure that he is even our unsub, but it would certainly help if I could speak with him. We just need to be a bit more creative.”

“Bit and Sylvie are gathering everything they can with regard to Bonnie Heraldsen. As you stated on the ride over here, we need to view her as the first victim, even if her death was due to natural causes.” Theo sidestepped two young women walking down the hall. “We know that Hermann was in love with Bonnie, we know that she died, and now we know that he dated at least one of the victims. Clearly, the twenty-year age difference between Hermann and Campbell was enough for her to keep their relationship a secret from her parents.”

‘Look, it’s obvious that the victims are being targeted due to their physical similarities to Bonnie Heraldsen. It’s only a matter of time before we have something solid to go on.”

“I’m not sure that we have time,” Brook said as they neared the front entrance. “The number three is significant in certain religions. Is the unsub murdering his victims simply based on physical attributes or is there something more to his ritual? He certainly isn’t conducting an exorcism the way one would be performed by the Catholic church.”

“We stick to your profile,” Theo stated matter-of-factly.

“I spent last night updating portions of the profile based on the new evidence that points toward Bonnie Heraldsen.” Brook came to a stop in front of the double doors. “As I said earlier, we need to think of her as if she’s the first victim. If Hermann is the unsub, he would be targeting women who look like her due to some unresolved guilt. What doesn’t make sense to me was that she passed away from breast cancer. The type of guilt that would drive someone to believe that the soul of another was possessing others would be astronomical. Something doesn’t add up here.”

Professor Milton Hermann might not be willing to speak with them, but Brook was aware of someone who just might answer their questions.
